Defrosting In The Refrigerator

If you plan on defrosting meat in the refrigerator, then you will need to plan ahead of time. It can a full day for meat to fully defrost in the refrigerator. However, if you have a large cut of meat, such as a roast or whole bird, then it may take up to 48 hours for it to completely defrost.

You should wrap the meat or place it in a covered dish before putting it in the refrigerator. This will catch any juice that runs off of the meat. Make sure that you cook the meat within three to five days of thawing it.

Defrosting Using Cold Water

This is a quicker way of defrosting meat. You can defrost small cuts of meat within an hour using cold water. Larger cuts of meat can take up to three hours to defrost. You will need to place the meat in a plastic bag before thawing it. Make sure that the bag does not have any leaks in it. If a bag has leaks, then bacteria could enter it.

Place the meat in cold water. Change the water every half hour. If you do not change the water, then the meat will decrease the water’s temperature. As a result of this, the meat will take a longer time to thaw.

Defrosting Meat In A Microwave

If you need to quickly thaw meat, then you may want to consider using a microwave. This is the fastest way to thaw meat. Remove the wrap or freezer bag prior to defrosting the meat. You will also need to remove the meat from the Styrofoam tray. Styrofoam is not safe to place in a microwave.

Place the meat inside of a microwave-safe dish and place a microwave safe covering over it. Use the defrost setting on your microwave. If your microwave does not have a defrost setting, then you can adjust the settings to 30 to 50 percent power. Microwave the meat eight to 10 minutes for every pound.

Keep in mind that microwaving the meat will cook it partially. That is why you will need to cook it as soon as you thaw it.

Thawing your meat properly will prevent bacteria from building up on it. You can use a microwave, cold water or a refrigerator to defrost the meat.
