Most people today who cook fish use a grill, oven or stove. However, in the ancient times, people would use an open-fire to cook fish because that was the only option that they had. There are several things that you will have to do in order to cook fish over the fire. Below are some tips for cooking fish over the fire:
Get The Fire Started
The first step in the process of cooking fish over an open fire is to get the fire started. You can very easily start a fire at the beach because there is a lot of driftwood there. Dry grass and wood shavings are two of the other things that you can use to get the fire started. You can also use small logs and rocks to build a fire. Your fire should be about the same size as the fish that you will be cooking.
Get Your Roasting Stick
After you have built your fire, you will need to get your roasting stick. You will also need some forked sticks. These will be used as support. The roasting stick should be strong because it will have to support the weight of the fish. Willows, which are often found near water, make great roasting sticks. You will need to insert the roasting stick through the mouth of the fish.
Begin Cooking The Fish
You can begin cooking the fish as soon as the flames have died down a little bit. In order to test the temperature, you will need to hold your hands over the coals. If the coals are so hot that you can only hold your hand over them for a few seconds, then you have the right temperature for cooking.
Place the fish over the coals with the scales pointed towards the heat. Cook the fish for five to 10 minutes, or until you notice that the skin is becoming crispy and charred. After that, you will need to turn the fish over so that the open side is now facing the heat. You can cook this side in a shorter amount of time.
It is very important for you to make sure that fish is cooked thoroughly. Many types of fish have microscopic worms inside of their flesh. This can spread diseases. Furthermore, some pets may get sick if they consume remnants from fish.
If the fish has been cooked thoroughly, then you should be able to easily peel off of the skin. The backbone will also be able to separate from the fish. Remove the stick and lay the fish on a clean rock. Use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. If you have left over fish, then you should bury it or put it back in the water.
